It's World Space Week!
World Space Week ends tomorrow, so we kind of missed the boat. Better late than never, especially since this year commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Space Age. That's right, it has been 50 years since the Soviet Union successfully launched Sputnik I, the world's first articificial satellite, into space. Technically the benchmark was on Oct. 04.
According to NASA, the launch opened an era of new political, military, technological and scientific developments. While the Sputnik launch was a single event, it marked the start of the Space Age and the U.S.-Soviet space race.
World Space Week was started by the United Nations in 1999 to recognize the anniversaries of both the Sputnik lauch (Oct. 04 1957) and The Outer Space Treaty, which was entered into force on Oct. 10, 1967.
