Weight Loss Trends: The COOKIE DIET™

Um, yeah it sounds too good to be true.

According to the COOKIE DIET Web site, the "cookies" are made of a secret blend of amino acid food proteins that curb your appetite without drugs."

The "cookies" are available in chocolate, raisin or coconut. And taste bad like shampoo.

"They're not the world's best cookies — but they weren't intended to be," Dr. Sanford Siegal, the creator of Dr. Siegal's® COOKIE DIET™, told ABC News. "The makers of Oreos and Mrs. Fields shouldn't lose any sleep."

While you're on this diet you eat one real meal a day, which typically is a dinner consisting of "6 ounces of chicken, turkey, fish or seafood." Fret not, you're allowed to have a cup of vegetables with your meat.

"The cookies aren't intended to serve as breakfast and lunch. They're meant for whenever the dieter is hungry." Eating six cookies per day is one of the requirements of the diet.

That--six cookies, plus the one dinner--brings the total daily calorie consumption up to 800. And dieters should also consume eight glasses of liquid a day, including coffee and tea.

Common sense says that's not healthy.

And Calling Dr. Siegal: Real cookies don't look like blobs of barf*!!

Guy Ritchie (Mr. Madonna) was, reportedly, a recent subscriber of the diet.

Madonna is credited with saying,
"My husband went on that cookie diet and it was such a turn-off because he didn't want to have sex. He's not on it anymore, thank god! He did lose weight but he didn't really need to lose that much weight."
That explains all the rumors regarding marital trouble. Blame the cookies.

* The cookies don't look exactly like 'blobs of barf.' They bear a striking resemblance though.

Update: Dr. Siegal rocks! Here's part of his humorous response to this blog entry: "In the 33 years since I created Dr. Siegal's COOKIE DIET, I'm pretty sure that nobody else has described the appearance of the the cookies as "blobs of barf" but I do remember one blogger at a newspaper in New York saying that they taste like shampoo. On the other hand, according to news reports I've read, Guy Ritchie preferred the cookies to sex. (As for the shampoo drinker, as a physician I advised him of the contraindications of drinking shampoo)...Since 1975, my cookies have enabled 500,000 of my patients to adhere to an 800 calorie diet and lose about 15 lbs. per month without significant hunger. For those stats I'm happy to forego first prize for beauty." It's hard to argue with that.

In the 33 years since I created Dr. Siegal's COOKIE DIET, I'm pretty sure that nobody else has described the appearance of the the cookies as "blobs of barf" but I do remember one blogger at a newspaper in New York saying that they taste like shampoo. (As for the shampoo drinker, as a physician I advised him of the contraindications of drinking shampoo).

Criticisms of our cookie and our weight loss program are usually targeted at the appearance or taste of the cookies and almost always include an admission from the source that he or she did, in fact, lose weight. Madonna admitted that her husband lost weight, as did the shampoo drinker.

Since 1975, my cookies have enabled 500,000 of my patients to adhere to an 800 calorie diet and lose about 15 lbs. per month without significant hunger. For those stats I'm happy to forego first prize for beauty.

Wow Dr. Siegal, I'm pretty speechless right now. Obviously your cookies don't really look like 'blobs of barf.' That was a little hyperbolic on my part, so I apologize.

And who doesn't like shampoo?

Followers of your diet subsist on 800 calories a day, so I'm not surprised they admit to losing weight. I guess I just question the sustainability. How long can a person eat, pretty much, nothing but cookies?

All of that being said, I'm glad to hear your diet's so successful. Those are some impressive stats.

Thanks for being a good sport!

Actually, Jen, my own patients, as well as the CookieDiet.com users, eat more than cookies. They eat the cookies during the day to control hunger. At night they have a reasonable dinner consisting of six ounces of chicken, fish, or turkey and one cup of non-starchy, green vegetables.

As for sustainability, we have patients who follow our program for years. I've treated more than a few 500 lb. patients over the years.
