Mary-Kate Olsen Issued Subpoena in Ledger Case

Ruh-roh. Earlier this week we learned that Mary-Kate Olsen, 22, was refusing to speak to federal investigators--probing into the accidental overdose and death of Health Ledger--until she was granted legal immunity. Now, according to Access Hollywood (WTF?!), the DEA office in New York has confirmed that Olsen has been issued a subpoena that could, theoretically, force her to testify in front of a grand jury if negotiations with her lawyer don't pan out.

However, AH does not provide further information (uh, 5 w's?). Information like, what are the chances of that actually happening?! (I'd say they're slim.)

Anyway, there's been much speculation about why Olsen wants immunity. NYC police were able to track down the sources for all but two--Vicodin and OxyContin-- of the prescription drugs found in Ledger's apartment. The masseuse who found his body called Olsen even before calling 911 . Which prompted Olsen to send over her bodyguards, who, subsequently, may have arrived on the scene before emergency responders.

Obviously that leaves a lot open to interpretation.

But Olsen's lawyer, Michael Miller, is adamant that she "had nothing whatsoever to do with the drugs found in Heath Ledger's home or his body, and she does not know where he obtained them." He also asserts that, contrary to tabloid reports, Olsen has "provided the Government with relevant information including facts in the chronology of events surrounding Mr. Ledger's death."

Which still doesn't explain why she feels the need for immunity.

But one "high-powered defense lawyer, Benjamin Brafman (who has absolutely nothing to do with the case), says " I think it would be wrong to assume she's done something criminal simply because she's invoking her 5th amendment against self-incrimination."

And adds, "It may not mean anything other than she's getting good legal advice."
